Genreville Map

Description

This "fun map" represents the world in which my comic series, which is in (slow) progress, takes place. I couldn't decide which genre I wanted to focus on so I came up with this city, called "Genreville", made up of all the comic book and "B" movie types I love, each represented by different neighbourhoods.

I was worried about posting this since I suppose it could open the ideas up to theft. On the other hand, posting on DA represents irrefutable proof that these were my ideas and that I posted them on this date so it might actually help preserve my copyright if a dispute ever arose.

Drawing this thing nearly finished me with all the fudged perspective and minute details (to give an idea of the actual scale: the astronaut on the bench easily fits within a dime). I think I've developed a nervous twitch from doing it but I'm hoping now that the rest of the comic will seem easier by comparison.

All drawn by hand with brush and small markers.

The story takes place on sort of a search through all the different neighbourhoods (and thereby through their respective genres). I'm hopeful this will keep the story fresh and interesting as it progresses.

In case it's not obvious, we have:

"YOKEL HOLLER" : Hillbilly heaven. Think Li'l Abner and/or Beverly Hillbillies-type characters and situations.

"BIG BOROUGH" : Your basic giant monster area. King Kong, Godzilla, giant people and so on. I'm not showing any of the copyrighted ones so I don't get sued!

"SCI-FI BURG" : Think the E.C. books like "Weird Science" as well as old science fiction movies too numerous to mention.

"HORROR HEIGHTS": Gothic horror, monsters, zombies, etc. the border between it and 'SCI-FI BURG" can be blurry in places, for obvious reasons.

"JUNGLE PARK" : Tarzan/Sheena style jungle adventure as an excuse to show scantily clad babes.

"VARMINT GULCH" : Cowboys and westerns. Unfortunately for fans of this stuff, this may be the one area the story bypasses this time. I thought I should have it though, in case of sequels.

"BUCCANEER BAY" : Pirate shenanigans. What more can I say? ARRRRRRR!!!

"TEENLAND" : Think "Teenage Dope Fiends and Reform School Girls", beatkniks, bikers, hotrods, and suchlike.

"NOIR STRIP" : Here's where you'd find Sam Spade, Philip Marlowe and others of that genre. It's here that the story starts with a visit to my own detective hero whom you'll meet once the first issue is available.

"CAPETOWN" : Flying, and/or superpowered beings of all types. Leotard stores make a killing in this neighbourhood!

"HAPPY PLACE" : "Funny animal" and "bigfoot" style cartoon creatures. If you stay here too long it starts to seep into your pores and the laws of physics change to their cartoon versions - look out for that steamroller!

Anyhow, I'm going to try to get this first issue out this year. In the meantime, enjoy this teaser. I am never drawing anything this complex again!
